The Pitfalls of Emotional Eating

Sometimes when you’re feeling down food seems like your best friend. Many people eat food for reasons other than hunger. They use food to comfort themselves during a tough time. Or sometimes they eat to ease boredom. This is known as emotional eating, and it can cause you to gain a lot of weight.

Emotional eating is when you eat for reasons other than being hungry. Stress, anxiety, anger, sadness, boredom, loneliness, and social pressure can all cause emotional eating. You also tend to overeat when you’re emotional. Not only that, but emotional eaters are also more likely to turn to unhealthy foods.

There aren’t too many people who binge on salad, broccoli, or carrots when they’re upset. Instead, comfort foods are usually things like potato chips and dip, ice cream, cake, chicken, and other fattening and salty foods. Emotional eaters are also more likely to struggle with their weight. Fortunately it’s possible to control emotional eating by taking control of your eating habits.

What Causes Emotional Eating?

Unfortunate events, such as unemployment or a death in the family, can lead to emotional eating. But less serious events, such as a traffic jam or rainy weather, can also lead to emotional eating. What causes this? Why do so many people turn to food for comfort? It’s often because food actually can make you feel good.

Some foods are almost just as addictive as certain drugs. Food such as chocolate causes the human body to release mood and satisfaction elevating hormones. This feels great, but the high only lasts for a short time. What happens is that people who eat chocolate for comfort began to associate the food with feeling good. So when they’re down they turn to chocolate without even thinking about it.

Food is also a distraction. If you’re worried about something, like a big meeting or an argument you had, eating can distract your thoughts. While you’re munching on that bag of chips you’re thinking about how good they taste. For that moment, your thoughts aren’t on your problems. But when the food is gone your problem will still be there.

Emotional eating is a bad habit that’s not easy to break. But it can be done if you make a real effort to control your eating.

Control Your Eating Habits

The first step in learning to control emotional eating is by recognizing when you’re really hungry. If you just ate a meal thirty minutes ago and your stomach is full, then it’s not time to eat again. But if you’re craving to eat anyway then you know it’s an emotional reaction.

It’s also helpful to keep track of what causes your emotional eating. What are these triggers? Is it boredom? Or is it sadness? Doing this will help you see what things you should avoid or deal with in order to avoid emotional eating.

And finally, find a hobby or another positive form of distraction. Instead of reaching for a bag of chips turn on some music instead. Listening to a good song is a great way to calm your nerves. Or reach for a good book instead of that ice cream. You can also stop buying junk food. Stock your kitchen with healthy snacks so if you do give in to emotional eating your snacks will be good for you.
