The Cabbage Soup diet has been around for awhile. It’s one of the
better known fad or crash diets in existence. Like most extreme diets,
no one knows where the cabbage soup diet originated. But that hasn’t
stopped people from giving it a try. Results have been mixed. Some
people report losing a significant amount of weight in a short period of
time. But others report no weight loss at all.

My girlfriend wanted me to give this diet plan a shot before we left for a family trip. I did and I hated it. I had tried the Sacred Heart Diet but thought the soup was disgusting. I figured at least with the cabbage soup diet I'd enjoy the soup. And I did. But not for seven days straight. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. That's a lot of cabbage - and a lot of gas! I'd rather take diet pills and try some other program like nutrisystem or medifast where the diet food is waiting for me. If I never see another bowl of cabbage soup I will be happy. And I didn't even lose a pound because I overcompensated with the other things I was allowed to eat. Don't do this diet!!

What is the Cabbage Soup Diet?

The cabbage soup diet is an extremely low calorie diet. In fact, some
say it’s dangerously low. But most fad or crash diets are extremely low
calorie diets. Like most quickie diets, this one is only supposed to be
followed for 7 days. The cabbage soup diet provides temporary weight
loss by cutting your calories to almost nothing.

The name of the diet, the cabbage soup diet, is pretty explanatory.
You basically spend a few days eating a lot of cabbage soup. Whoever
invented this diet, or someone who changed something along the way,
claimed that cabbage has fat burning properties. This has never been
proven, and should probably be regarded as untrue.

The Cabbage Soup Diet Involves Lots of Cabbage

You should only attempt the cabbage soup diet if you love cabbage or
really need to lose weight quickly. This is a strict diet that must be
followed exactly as instructed. And that means eating a lot of cabbage
soup for 7 days straight. There’s no set recipe for the cabbage soup. So
any cabbage soup recipe would probably work. You can only drink water,
unsweetened fruit juice and skim milk (on certain days). But you can eat
other foods in moderation.

The cabbage soup diet is a seven day diet, but it’s hard to follow.
On the first day you can eat as much cabbage soup and fruit as you like.
Bananas are the exception, and you can’t eat them on the first day. No
explanation is given for this.

On the second day you can eat more cabbage soup, but instead of fruit
you should eat vegetables. One potato is also allowed. One the third
day, there is of course more cabbage soup. But you can also eat
vegetables and fruits, minus potatoes and bananas. There’s still no
explanation given for this.

On the fourth day of the cabbage soup diet you can eat bananas with
your cabbage soup, and also drink skimmed milk. On the fifth and sixth
days of the cabbage soup diet, you can eat beef and vegetables (minus
potatoes) with your cabbage soup. And on the final day you can eat
vegetables and brown rice with your cabbage soup. You can also drink
unsweetened fruit juice.

Cabbage Soup Diet Results

You probably will lose weight with the cabbage soup diet. Most people
do report losing a significant amount of weight fairly quickly. But
they also report gaining it all back fairly quickly too. Diets like the
cabbage soup diet don’t provide long term weight loss. Diets such as
this one are strictly for quickie weight loss, like for a special event.
If you do decide to try the cabbage soup diet, try to make your cabbage
soup interesting and tasty. Maybe then the seven days won’t be so bad.
